Patch testing is an allergen skin test designed to help determine if substances are causing a skin rash (contact dermatitis). The patch test contains substances that will be taped to your back for 48-72 hours. During this time, you should not get the testing area wet. If the tape becomes loose, you should immediately re-tape it using hypoallergenic tape. You should return to our office within 48-72 hours to have the patch removed. A positive response will result in a red rash and inching at the site of the substance to which you are allergic.

Reactions to patch testing may include:
Itching and burning may occur. If severe, please contact the physician before removing. Please try not to scratch the patch test area. Increased skin color at the test site may occur, but generally fades over days to weeks.
